Question 1

Are all LED downlights dimmable?

Accepted Answer

No. Only products that specifically state they are dimmable support brightness adjustment. A standard LED downlight is designed simply to switch on and off. Connecting a non-dimmable fitting to a dimmer can cause flickering, buzzing, switching problems or reduced lifespan.

Question 2

Which dimming system is best for homes?

Accepted Answer

TRIAC dimming is generally the most common residential solution because it can often be integrated into existing wiring by replacing the standard switch with a compatible dimmer. It is suitable for living rooms, bedrooms and dining areas. More advanced homes with smart lighting systems may use DALI, although this requires greater planning and full compatibility between all components.

Question 3

What is the difference between TRIAC, DALI and 0-10V?

Accepted Answer

TRIAC uses phase-cut dimming and is common in homes and small commercial premises. DALI is a digital lighting control system that allows individual luminaires, lighting scenes and zones to be managed. 0-10V is an analogue system that controls groups of luminaires using a dedicated voltage signal.

Question 4

Can I use my existing dimmer with LED downlights?

Accepted Answer

Not always. Many older dimmers were designed for halogen or incandescent lamps and require a higher minimum electrical load than LED downlights provide. This may result in flickering or unstable dimming. A dimmer specifically designed for LEDs is recommended, and the total connected load should always fall within the manufacturer's specified range. It is also important to check whether the downlight requires leading-edge or trailing-edge dimming.

Question 5

Why does a dimmable downlight flicker?

Accepted Answer

Flickering is usually caused by incompatibility between the downlight, driver and dimmer. It may also result from insufficient electrical load, unsuitable dimmers or attempts to dim below the stable operating range. When several luminaires are connected together, always verify total wattage and dimmer compatibility. If flickering only occurs at low brightness, adjusting the dimmer's minimum setting or replacing it with an LED-specific model usually solves the problem.

Question 6

Does dimming reduce electricity consumption?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lower brightness reduces energy consumption, although not always in direct proportion. A downlight operating at 50% brightness generally consumes less power than at full output, but the exact saving depends on the driver and dimming technology. In installations with long operating hours, dimming can provide meaningful energy savings, especially when combined with sensors, zoning or lighting scenes.

Question 7

Is a CCT downlight the same as a dimmable downlight?

Accepted Answer

No. A CCT downlight changes colour temperature, for example between 3000K, 4000K and 6000K. A dimmable downlight changes light intensity. Some models combine both functions, but this should be clearly specified by the manufacturer.

Question 8

Is dimming recommended in a living room?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Living rooms benefit greatly from dimming because lighting can easily adapt to different activities. Higher brightness is useful for reading, cleaning or entertaining, while lower levels create a comfortable atmosphere for watching television or relaxing.

Question 9

Do dimmable downlights last longer?

Accepted Answer

They can. Operating below maximum brightness reduces the temperature of both the LED and the driver. Since heat is one of the main causes of electronic component ageing, correctly dimmed installations may maintain performance for longer.

Question 10

How many dimmable downlights can I connect to one dimmer?

Accepted Answer

This depends on the total wattage of all connected downlights and the minimum and maximum load ratings of the dimmer. The combined load of every luminaire must remain within the specified operating range.
